Overview:

The Carbontech Development Initiative aims to strengthen New York State as a global hub of carbon capture and storage development by facilitating creation, validation, and launch of cutting-edge solutions. CDI will award research and commercialization grants in three programs. 

The application period for CDI's third solicitation is open and will close on Wednesday, March 12 at 5:00PM ET

Areas of Interest:

The technologies CDI funds will be organized around three (3) Topic Areas (TAs) representing the carbontech areas of highest relevance to stimulating a nation-leading carbontech innovation and commercialization ecosystem in New York State including:

  • Carbon Capture Technology
  • Carbon-to-Building Materials
  • Carbon-to-Chemicals/Fuels/Materials

Eligibility:

CDI has three programs, two Research Programs and one Commercialization Program:

Research Programs:

  • Propel Carbontech (Teams External to Columbia University only) - RFP
  • Carbontech Leap (Columbia University only) - RFP

Commercialization Programs:

  • Bridge Carbontech (Teams External to Columbia University only) - RFP

Funding & Project Length:

Propel Carbontech (External to Columbia)

  • Technology Readiness Level: 2 – 3
  • Individual project awards: $50,000 - $150,000
  • Project Duration: 12 to 18 months and must be completed including submission of all deliverables by June 30, 2027.
  • Teams must be external to Columbia University.

Carbontech Leap (Columbia University only)

  • Technology Readiness Level: 2 – 3
  • Individual project awards: up to $250,000 (Leap project are eligible for cost-share, please see application for more details)
  • Project Duration: Up to 24 months and must be completed including submission of all deliverables by June 30, 2027.
  • This program is open to applicants who are core faculty members of Columbia University.

Bridge Carbontech (Startups external to Columbia only)

  • Technology Readiness Level: 4 – 9
  • Individual project awards: $287,500 - $375,000
  • Project Duration: Up to 24 months and must be completed including submission of all deliverables by June 30, 2027.
  • Open to startups external to Columbia at mid – late stages of technology development
